It's true what they say, you discover what really matters when you look at what you take first to settle into a new place. I didn't realize how much skincare product I had until I started packing up my belongings for the move. These products I've been using for some time now and they made the final cut, easy. I definitely had to have them the first few nights in my empty apartment. Here are some stand outs as part of my nightly regimen:

Koh Gen Do liquid lotion: sometimes I'll use this alone at night, and other times I'll use it in the mornings before I apply BB cream/SPF. It's refreshing and light, and I feel like my skin appears more even-toned after application. A few dabs on a cotton pad is good for the entire face.

Goldfaden MD bright eyes: for the night owls who stay up way past midnight and for those who also have to rise early, Bright Eyes is a godsend. Throughout high school and college I had pretty prominent dark circles and going into my twenties I believed that I just had to face the fact that they'd become an indefinite part of my appearance. And believe me, I'd tried so many eye creams claiming the reduction of stubborn dark circles... none really seemed to do the job until Goldfaden MD's.

Jurlique serum and face oil: I use the serum as my nightly regimen, and then in conjunction with the face oil every other or two days to really moisturize my skin. I'll apply the serum all over after patting my under eyes with Goldfaden MD, and then I'll use a cotton pad and dab the face oil on my face, with a few extra pats on drier spots. I've seen a big difference in luminance after continually using the serum- love how light and refreshing it is. I use the face oil just to lock in and retain the moisture. My skin always-always feels amazing the morning after.

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins face mask: for a quick refresh, this mega-mushroom skin relief face mask is a good one to go with. After just five or so minutes, you can just wipe the mask off with a wet paper towel. It visibly reduces redness and it is so easy to put on and take off- love that.

I'm in the middle of settling into my new home and living out of boxes marked with extraneous labels has been pretty daunting. Other than wearing my sleep wear out, I haven't really had the energy to rummage through the boxes to find the right clothes. As of late I've been glued to this top, the Take-Two from Style Saint (on sale, grabbed from the pop-up I hosted last weekend), for its versatility. I've worn it over bralettes and camis, under leather jackets and as peek-a-boo sleeve details- I love the fact that I can switch the top around and wear it either as a high-neck or a low v-neck. Thankful to have something multifaceted enough to add some nuance to my styling choices as I try to figure out my life in boxes.

Be a saint

Neon Blush, Style Saint, pop-up shops DTLA, Daily Dose Cafe, ethical fashion, socially conscious and environmentally friendly brandsStyle Saint wrap dress

Hi guys - I'm hosting a pop-up shop with Style Saint, a brand I've the utmost respect for, this Thursday the 12th and Friday the 13th in the Arts District of DTLA. I'd love for any local readers to come by and say hi, shop some of my favorite silk and lace pieces and/or grab a bite or coffee. I was introduced to the brand personally by Allison some time last year and since then it's been hard to stay away- Allison's inspirational drive and love for the cause make my frequent visits seem second nature.

So a little bit about Style Saint: the brand strives to make ethical and sustainable fashion happen without sacrificing quality or style. In every part of the process, from fabric to finished product, Style Saint carefully considers purpose and impact. Not only does each piece save hundreds of gallons of water (than your usual garment) and create ethical labor for American factory workers, Style Saint keeps costs low by selling directly to consumers like us, and serves us beautiful pieces that pass the test of time. So, what better idea than to throw a pop-up so you can see the beautiful pieces in person?

P.s. my friends over at Daily Dose have graciously named a dish after my blog. "The Neon Blush", a three-egg omelette, is made with brie cheese, braised leeks and jalapeño + a side of mashed Okinawa yam, topped with pico de gallo made with heirloom tomatoes. Also comes with baby arugula salad and toast with cold butter and pear jam. No bias here- it's really good and filling! Hope to see you there :)

A year for me

2/9/15

Neon Blush, Godiva Lunar New Year special edition chocolate, Year of the Goat, jasmine and angelica root, chrysanthemum and ginger, gui flower and ginseng, classic belgian chocolateNeon Blush, Godiva Lunar New Year special edition chocolate, Year of the Goat, jasmine and angelica root, chrysanthemum and ginger, gui flower and ginseng, classic belgian chocolateNeon Blush, Godiva Lunar New Year special edition chocolate, Year of the Goat, jasmine and angelica root, chrysanthemum and ginger, gui flower and ginseng, classic belgian chocolate
One of my new year's resolutions includes making the effort to bake more. I actually love to cook and feel pretty confident just whipping something new up without referring to a recipe but when it comes baking, I'm at a standstill. I realize it's because I lack the patience and precision that comes with baking, and I want to work on that. I'm hoping to attempt baking something new every month, and this month I'm looking at this recipe for the green tea cocoa nibs chiffon cake. I thought this would be appropriate to start with as I -love- matching green tea with chocolate. Speaking of green tea and chocolate pairings, I found one of my favorite combos in GODIVA's limited edition Lunar New Year gift box - the jasmine and angelica root in their dark chocolate ganache, mmm.

This limited edition Lunar New Year gift box also includes two other unique flavors: a chrysanthemum and ginger encased in a white chocolate ganache, and gui flower and ginseng in their delectable milk chocolate ganache (along with their classic Belgian chocolate flavors). These goat-piece chocolate bites are so unique and absolutely perfect for the tea lover. I'm a huge fan of the compilation of this limited edition box, and I'd love to share this experience. I'm partnering with GODIVA on hosting a giveaway for the chance to win one box of chocolate for an entire year-- yes, doesn't this take that saying 'treat yourself' to a new level? I think so. Over the years I've become an avid coffee drinker- I don't think I'm addicted physiologically (I can still function almost the same on a day without it), rather I really love the smell of the roast and the taste of course. I'll admit, I'm not your most knowledgeable on coffee bean 411, but there are certain foods/dishes I've tried and come to really like with the brew. Check below for some of my favorite pairings at spots around the Arts District in DTLA.

Neon Blush, coffee in DTLA, Daily Dose Cafe, Blue Bottle Coffee Arts District, Stumptown Coffee DTLA, Urth Caffe DTLA, The Pie Hole, Bread Lounge, Zinc Cafe, Spring For Coffee, The Classic Coffee, Verve Coffee
1. The Daily Dose, 1830 Industrial St., Los Angeles, CA
For a sweet snack, try their brown butter cookie with the Buena Vista. What distinguishes the BV from other sweetened drinks is the use of caramelized brown sugar, so it's sweetened but with a subtle 'burnt' taste. With a quick dip, the crispy but chewy cookie makes the perfect snack as its sweetness is toned down. Another one of my favorite combos is their Farmer sandwich and white juice with ground coffee. I'm a meat lover through and through, but I will always order this sandwich over anything else on the menu (if it's still available). With squash, burrata, guacamole, yam, heirloom tomato and pesto sandwiched between two slices of olive bread (sourced from The Bread Lounge), The Farmer is light enough to go with their 'white juice' (smoothie made with coconut, almonds, dates, honey, banana, coconut and almond water). The added ground coffee bean just gives the smoothie an extra grit, which I love, and that little energy boost.

2. The Pie Hole, 714 Traction Ave., Los Angeles, CA
The Pie Hole is my favorite spot to get the entire package- here you have delicious savory options and also one of, if not the best dessert pies around. Every single one of my friends I've introduced to The Pie Hole's Mac 'n' Cheese has freaked out about how good it is. The baked crust is out of this world and I love slathering ketchup with it so it seems somewhat like (a heavy) breakfast for me- with a lighter cappuccino, my time at The Pie Hole feels like the perfect morning routine. For something sweet, I love going with their famed Earl Grey and chai latte- the chai plays down the sweetness of the pie while pronouncing the spice of the two tea flavors.

3. Blacktop Coffee, 826 East Third St., Los Angeles, CA
While they don't have as much space to lounge as I'd like it to, this minimalist coffee spot has got fantastic coffee and some of the best pastries around. I especially love their lattes as they're made with almond and hazel nut milk, which I like unsweetened with their crispy/chewy Brown Butter chocolate chip sea salt cookie. You get a heavy nutty flavor (which I'm all for) paired with something salty and sweet, which sums up my favorite kind of combination.

More to come in a future post!
